Delusions of Adequacy

Yay, moved.

And for those of you who followed the link from the old place, I've finally moved as well. I moved to Toowong on Wednesday. Yay. Nobody come visit though, I'm still missing a lot of imporant stuff, like, um, furniture. There's no net access either and I think I'm probably too cheap to do anything about that.

Back at uni

I'm back at UQ enrolled in a B.Sc. again. Yes, I already have a B.Sc. from there but this time I'm taking Earth Science subjects courses. Hopefully I'll end up doing honours, assuming my enthusiasm isn't crushed first and I can afford to be there for that long.

Lectures started today. I'm taking three subjects with only twelve contact hours per week. Unfortunately they've managed to spread them out across all five days, so annoyingly I have two days with just a one hour lecture each and another with a two hour prac. Fortunately one subject doesn't start until May so I'll have Tuesdays off until then.

Hm, two months without an update. One thing I meant to mention but never got 'round to was seeing Radio Birdman at The Tivoli. Their first album, Radios Appear, is as old as I am so they're getting on a bit but they were still amazing. It was also pleasantly smoke-free, despite a few people trying to get away with it.

New nose

Anyone who's been paying attention on #humbug will know I recently went into hospital to get my deviated septum fixed. It's been a week since surgery and I've had much less pain than I expected. I woke up after the operation with only a dull ache, and other than a few brief sharp stabbing pains each day so far, there's been hardly any pain. The most painful thing was the morphine injection an hour before they removed the packing, that really burned.

I've been told to expect congestion for 3-4 weeks. It clears up occasionally and when it does I can definitely breathe better. Unfortunately it's still a bit tender up there, so after a few deep breaths through my nose it starts to sting a little. Oh, and my nose doesn't look any different, it's the bone further back in they that they straightened, not the cartilage out the front.

It'll be nice to be able to finally be able to breathe properly..

Nose job

Well, sort of. I'm off to hospital tomorrow for septoplasty to fix my deviated septum (photo of my CT scan). Here are some more links about it and the procedure. Hopefully by this time tomorrow I'll be all straightened out and in minimal pain. I've been told I'll have to relax for a week or two after the surgery. That shouldn't be a problem..

New bits and pieces

I've bought a few new toys recently. The first is a replacement for my dead 17" CRT, a shiny new 17" Samsung SyncMaster 173p LCD. It's got DVI and a normal old 15 pin VGA input but unfortunately doesn't have any controls other than a power button. Brightness, contrast, etc are controlled by software (I knew this before buying it) so if I want to mess with that kind of thing on a Linux box I need to use something like ddccontrol. It's sitting beside a 15" Samsung SyncMaster 15GLe bought back in 1995, hopefully the 173p will last as long.

Next up is an Antec Sonata case, the "Quietest Case Available". It's big(ger than the one it replaced), black, and that machine is definitely quieter in the new case. If I give in to temptation and buy a new machine it'll probably go in one of these.

Third.. I finally have a chair so now I can sit at my desk rather than just use it to keep piles of magazines and books 'n stuff off the ground.

Hm, and finally, yesterday, I bought the third book of Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle. Now I've got a reason to read the second book and two to finish the first.. I also picked up a copy of WarCraft III. I haven't bought/played a game in ages, when did they start coming in these tiny boxes? Anyway, plenty to do while I'm recovering. (see next post, probably)

Political Compass

I was just closing a bunch of browser windows that had been lying around far too long and came across one where I'd gone through the Political Compass test that had recently swept through HUMBUG.

Anyway apparently I'm..
Economic Left/Right: -8.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.87

..which puts me in the same area as Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

Flying with Marco

Woohoo. Today Marco took me flying in a Cessna 152 from Redcliffe out over the Glasshouse Mountains. (Those pages don't say much/have many pictures, but I couldn't find any that do)

I took some photos.. If I've gotten any names wrong then let me know.
The plane..
Coonowrin
Mt Beerwah with Coonowrin(I think) in the background
Mt Beerwah again
Caboolture River.. I think, not really sure
